Jimi Hendrix iOS app

Long gone are the days of buying an album and admiring the artwork on the cover- opening it up to check out the all the pictures, lyrics, and other goodies that were found inside. Some albums had ticket stubs, or vintage photos, some had fold out posters or, in the case of one Cheech and Chong album, a giant fold out “cigarette paper”. Each album had it’s own personality. And when you opened the album cover, you felt a real connection with the artists.

Songwriters, illustrators, photographers, designers, musicians- they all poured their talents into creating each album as a collaborative work of art. From the music within, to the art on the cover- this was the experience of music. An experience that faded with the transition from vinyl to CD’s, and has all but disappeared in this modern age of digital downloads.

Jimi Hendrix: The Complete Experience, an iOS app developed by Universal Mind, is bringing this experience back to music- maybe even in a bigger and better way than albums ever did.

Jimi Hendrix Appumentary on iPad and iPhone

The Jimi Hendrix iOS app brings back much of what the old albums used to have, things like ticket stubs hanging out of scrapbooks, vintage concert posters, and old photographs. But this app is much more than just this, Jimi Hendrix: The Complete Experience actually tells Jimi’s story and chronicles important moments throughout his musical career. This is why it garners the name “appumentary”, as this app is very much like an interactive documentary. The appumentary is a musical experience that can make you feel closer to an artist than ever before.

The Jimi Hendrix appumentary contains live video footage, music videos, film clips, interactive maps, tons of photos, and lots more. The complete Jimi Hendrix discography is also chronicled in the app- but only previews are available for listening unless you actually own the music.

One of the coolest features of this app is the location lens. You can automatically receive a notification if you’re nearby an important Hendrix landmark, and get a stamp on your “virtual passport” for visiting it. This way you’ll never kick yourself for having missed that once in a lifetime chance to see an important location from Jimi’s career.

Jimi Hendrix: The Complete Experience isn’t quite complete yet, though. Updates are promised, and each one will add more content to build upon the Jimi Hendrix story. Check out the promo video below and see what you think- do you want one for each of your favorite bands? I do.

Jimi Hendrix: The Complete Experience iOS application is compatible with all iOS 5 devices, including the iPad 1 and 2, iPhone 3GS, 4, and 4S, and the iPod Touch 3rd and 4th Generation, Airplay.

It would be nice if we started seeing this for more musicians. That used to be one of the highlights of buying an album years ago..

killer4110 I agree, it would be awesome. This could also be a fix for their poor music sales. Artists should be innovating like this if they want to rejuvenate the music industry.

israel.kendall Absolutely as long as they don't start charging use ,$3.99 for a song, and saying the price is that much because of the artwork..

killer4110 I'd like to see artists start one for their band with lots of free content. Then, maybe they could sell add-ons, or put in bonus content for people who purchase their album. There is a lot they could do with something like this.
